I was searching the web and came across my article on your blog. I was excited and happy to see my article being used by others. Included in the next Fostering Prospectives, Nov. 2008 issue is my article on how to create a relationship with birth parents. I take the birth parents' stages of grief and break down what feelings and behaviors they may be experiencing. Then, I share strategies and tips for foster and adoptive parents in trying to develop trust. Meeting the birth parents for the first time can be scary and frustrating. So any tips available are helpful.

I am a Christian and it is an honor to have my article in your publication.

I am not sure you answered the question posed in your title. I am a parent through adoption. I have adopted through the foster care system. I also have two children who are adopted from an orphanage in Haiti. I am not anti-adoption. However, I feel strongly that God calls individuals and not the universal church to adopt. The universal church should be about the business of orphan reduction. Adopting children puts a bandaid on the problems of poverty, addiction and mental illness.

The universal church should also be involved in adoption reform. As a Christian, I am saddened and embarrassed to find that the groups most vocal in lobbying to keep adoption laws as is are primarily Christian. There is absolutely no biblical support for my claiming to be the mother of the children who entered my home through adoption. I am parenting them because their mothers found themselves in horrible, terrible circumstances. There is absolutely no biblical support for the current system of closed records which deny adoptees the right to information about their history and open the door for illegal and unethical adoption practices.

I hope that the church never, ever gets to the place where adoption is seen as a Christian duty.
